August in Gilbert always carries that particular mix of blistering heat and buzzing anticipation — the summer is winding down, backpacks are being restocked, and families across the 85296 corridor are squeezing in every last appointment before school bells ring again. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon serving this community, I find August to be one of the most meaningful months of the year, precisely because so many of the young people I see are standing at genuine turning points in their lives — heading off to college, starting new jobs, or simply growing up in ways that show up clearly in their oral health.

This August, our team at Gilbertson OMA Oral Surgery had the privilege of caring for ten patients from the Gilbert area, and the pattern we saw was both predictable and telling. Of those visits, six involved wisdom tooth extractions — a number that reflects something I see every summer without fail. The back-to-school season is, without question, the single busiest time of year for wisdom tooth care. Teenagers and young adults who have been putting off that nagging jaw discomfort all year suddenly realize that addressing it now — while they still have the cushion of summer recovery time — makes far more sense than dealing with an emergency mid-semester, hundreds of miles from home.

There is a real community insight buried in that statistic that I think is worth sharing with Gilbert families. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, rarely announce themselves dramatically at first. They tend to create a slow, building pressure — occasional soreness, mild swelling, or a sense that something just isn’t quite right in the back of the mouth. Parents and young adults in the Gilbert area often tell me they suspected something for months before finally coming in. The summer window is genuinely one of the best opportunities to act, because recovery from an extraction typically calls for a few days of rest and soft foods — something far easier to manage during a break than during finals week or a new semester of college coursework.

From a clinical standpoint, early intervention almost always leads to better outcomes. When wisdom teeth are addressed before they become impacted or infected, the procedure is more straightforward, recovery tends to be smoother, and the surrounding teeth and bone are better protected. For the families across the Gilbert area considering whether to schedule a consultation, I would encourage you not to wait for pain to become the deciding factor. A quick panoramic X-ray can tell us a tremendous amount about what is happening beneath the surface and help us plan accordingly.

August also reminds me of why I chose to practice right here in Gilbert rather than elsewhere. This is a community of engaged, health-conscious families who ask good questions and take an active role in their care. That makes my job genuinely rewarding. Whether a young person is heading off to Arizona State, starting a trade program, or simply entering high school, making sure their oral health is in order is one of the kindest things a family can do before that next chapter begins.

If you or someone you love in the Gilbert community has been wondering about wisdom teeth, jaw discomfort, or any oral surgery concern, I warmly invite you to reach out to our team at Gilbertson OMA Oral Surgery.
